Bruce West Named Assistant Commissioner of Public Safety

In November, Governor Tim Walz and Minnesota Commissioner of Public Safety John Harrington appointed State Fire Marshal Bruce West to be the new Assistant Commissioner of Public Safety. Assistant Commissioner West has been in the fire-service for 41 years were he served with the Anoka Fire Department and as Elk River Fire Chief for 15 years. In addition to his time as state fire marshal, West served as executive director of the Minnesota Board of Fire Training and Education.
West’s appointment is significant because it marks the first time in the Department of Public Safety's (DPS) history that a person with a primarily fire-service background has been named to a senior management position within DPS. It helps ensure that the fire-service will have a voice in an agency that tends to be law-enforcement dominated. It also fulfills a commitment that Governor Walz has made to the MPFF of enhancing the fire-services influence within DPS.
