On this date 100 years ago, delegates representing 24 of the 65 original fire fighter unions affiliated with the IAFF on February 28, 1918, founded the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF). Our forefathers had a vision for the future - to better the lot of those it represented, make a difference in their lives and livelihoods, and make their job safer. The IAFF became the voice of the fire fighter, the protector of the protector.
Looking back over the last century, we can all be proud of the great union we’ve built together - a union that represents more than 310,000 professional fire fighters and paramedics - and the advances and achievements we have made on behalf of our members in two great countries. It’s truly been a century of progress.
We begin with 1918-1928, and will be releasing additional decades over the coming weeks, so you will have time to walk through the history of our union, see new information each time you visit and share it with others.
Please feel free to repurpose the online history on your local’s website and in communications with members and your communities. The timeline website also has anniversary logos you can use and other elements to help you celebrate with us.
Our history is our legacy. Collecting and sharing it, especially with new members, is important if we are going to build another century of progress over the next 100 years.
