MDA Fill the Boots are underway and breaking records!
Posted On: Aug 19, 2009 (10:41:25)
MDA Fill the Boots are underway and breaking records!
The official Fill the Boot season is officially underway and MPFF members across the state are already breaking last year’s record totals.  To date, MPFF members have raised over $117,000 for MDA with Fill the Boots yet to happen this year in Minneapolis, Duluth, St. Cloud, St. Anthony, Coon Rapids, Cloquet, Faribault and more.  Across the nation, IAFF members are feeling the same success that MPFF members are. As of August 14th, IAFF Fill the Boot drives for MDA are ahead of last year by more than $530,000.

Here are some of the outstanding results thus far in 2009:

South Metro Local 724/1059 held their 2nd annual Fill the Boot for MDA on June 16-18. During the three days, members of the South Metro Local surpassed last year’s total by over $25o0 to raise an outstanding $14,358 for MDA.  Local 724/1059 President Ben Bailey led the Fill the Boot efforts along with tremendous support for all the fire fighters. Fire fighters braved a rainy first day of collections to help surpass last year’s goal.  This is a total of $449 per member.

Maplewood Local 4470 held their 1st annual Fill the Boot for MDA on August 1 – 2nd and raised a total of $9,530 for MDA! Union and non-union members rallied together to make their first fill the Boot a success. They volunteered their time for 2 days, 8 hours each day and stood in front of 3 local businesses. The community was really behind the fire fighters and made this a success!  Maplewood fire fighters also spent one of the following days after the Fill the Boot visiting with a MDA summer camper, Nick,  who had recently underwent spinal fusion surgery. They presented Nick with shirts, patches, a bobble-head and a helmet signed by all the fire fighters. Nick’s mom comments “it was the highlight of Nick’s day to see these fire fighters care so much about him”.  In 2009, Local 4470 members raised a total of $794 per member.

Austin Local 598 held their 1st annual Fill the Boot for MDA on August 5-7 and raised an outstanding $14,153. Members of Local 598 hit the streets for 3 days collecting from the local Austin community. Council members were overwhelmingly supportive of the program, as well as local media showed a generous outpouring of coverage on the great work that the Local 598 members were doing.  Tim Olson and Troy Tigner led the efforts for Local 598.  As a Local, they raised an average of $1,573 per member which will most likely place them in the top 10-15 Locals in the country based on $/member raised.

Albert Lea Local 1041 held their 7th annual Fill the Boot for MDA during their 4th of July Celebration parade and collected a total of $3,215 for MDA.  Over the past years, Local 1041 members have helped raise over $21,000 for MDA. Local 1041’s efforts are led by Al Schallock and Bill Lehman.  In 2009, Local 1041 raised an average $268 per member.

St. Paul Local 21 held their 3rd annual Fill the Boot for MDA on August 5-7.  Led by Fill the Boot Coordinator Brandon Scheunemann and Fill the Boot Committee member Jeremy Barta and Local 21 President Mike Smith, the members of Local 21 raised a record breaking $69,792 for MDA. This is a growth of over $22,000 from 2008.  Local 21 members stood on over 22 intersections throughout the city of St. Paul while on-duty and despite a rain-soaked final day, were able to surpass last year’s numbers with ease.  St. Paul Local 21 members raised an average of $185 per member.
